Mark Chay on Singapore’s COVID-19 response

08:30 Min

Singaporeans have shown tremendous strength and resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, said NMP Mark Chay. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 21), he said even with the profound economic disruptions caused by global lockdowns, Singaporeans took rapid action to contain the virus and protect their fellow citizens. They embraced the circuit breaker and other safe management measures with courage, resilience and a collective sense of responsibility, he said. From reducing the reliance on foreign workers to closing schools and workplaces, citizens across all sectors came together to prioritise safety for their fellow countrymen and women, he added. Mr Chay said their strength and resilience proved that unity can provide tremendous positive change. He said the lessons learnt from the pandemic will help to prepare the nation for any crisis in the future, with Singaporeans “ready to face whatever comes next”. He also commended Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh for stating that his Workers’ Party would support and not undermine national efforts in times of crisis. Mr Chay said this is deeply encouraging and underscores “our responsibility as Parliamentarians” to work together for Singapore and Singaporeans.
