Mark Lee on advancing mental health

10:10 Min

Singapore must build support systems that acknowledge mental health not as a sign of weakness, but as an aspect of humanity, said NMP Mark Lee. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 6), he stressed the need for a balanced approach to foster an environment where empathy and endurance co-exist and mental wellness is recognised and supported without diminishing the value of resilience. He urged the Government to look into ways to engage and incentivise more companies to support interventions to address specific workplace stresses. The Government should also continuously engage with businesses for feedback. Mr Lee also hopes to see continued support in the training of professionals and senior managers in nurturing mental well-being champions. He also proposed integrating the recognition framework with tangible economic incentives, such as prioritisation in Government procurement. Mr Lee also proposed customisation of mental health support for specific occupational needs. These include police officers, national servicemen and frontline service staff who are susceptible to specific mental health stresses.
