Melvin Yong on Child Development Co-Savings (Amendment) Bill

07:09 Min

Is there a correlation between quality of work-life balance offered by employers and the number of staff who choose to start a family? MP Melvin Yong suggested that the Government conduct a local study on this, which could give insights into work practices that need to be adopted or even legislated to provide Singaporeans with a more conducive work environment to start a family. He also called for the Tripartite Advisory on Mental Well-being at Workplaces to be elevated to the level of a tripartite standard, so that clear norms can be set on after-hours work communication. Employers should also be allowed to claim benefits if they provide good flexible work arrangements to staff with children, he said. Mr Yong urged more support for adoptive and foster parents, who he said often have to deal with problems that are more complicated than in a traditional family setting. He spoke in Parliament on Monday (Sep 18).
