Melvin Yong on Prisons (Amendment) Bill
A proposed new scheme allowing prison inmates to train and work in the community is very welcome, but even more can be done to help ex-offenders reintegrate into society, said MP Melvin Yong in Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 11). He said they may be automatically excluded from available jobs, such as those in the security sector or which require entry to restricted areas like the ports and airport. He urged the authorities to continue reviewing such restrictions. Mr Yong also suggested having "digital ambassadors" to familiarise inmates with technological developments such as mobile payments.
