Melvin Yong on Women's Charter (Amendment) Bill
Divorce by mutual agreement that the marriage has broken down irretrievably could make the process easier for couples but could be a loophole for errant acts such as sham divorces. MP Melvin Yong raised this concern in Parliament on Monday (Jan 10), citing online chatter that encourages couples seeking to own multiple properties to divorce in name to avoid the Additional Buyer's Stamp Duty. He wanted to know how the Government intends to track down such cases, as well as the penalties it will impose. Mr Yong also said more can be done to "intervene upstream" to strengthen marriages, such as making marriage preparation courses mandatory, as well as providing more affordable marriage counselling services. Another way is to have regular "health checkups" for couples, especially for those who are married between five and 10 years as this seems to be the period when marriages are more vulnerable.
