Ministerial statement: K Shanmugam on allegations of police mishandling rape case
In Parliament on Monday (Oct 4), Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam asked MP Raeesah Khan about allegations she had previously made in the House regarding the behaviour of a police officer who interviewed a rape victim. Mr Shanmugam asked for details such as which police station it was, the month or year it happened, and a rough idea of the officer or officers involved - for instance, their age, race or gender. He said this was not to re-traumatise the victim, but to ensure the claims could be investigated and the officer(s) disciplined if necessary. Ms Khan repeatedly declined to give any details on grounds of confidentiality. Mr Shanmugam said the police would investigate "this very serious matter" further, including interviewing Ms Khan; and any allegations of misconduct would be referred to SPF's Internal Affairs Office.
