Mohd Fahmi Aliman on Platform Workers Bill
The Platform Workers Bill is a significant step forward in acknowledging and addressing the challenges faced by platform workers in the gig economy, said MP Mohd Fahmi Aliman. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 10), he said encouraging younger workers to actively opt into the CPF system and enhancing job prospects through targeted upskilling and career development paths are crucial steps but there is still room for improvement. He stressed the need to continue to refine the strategies and policies to ensure that the evolving needs of platform workers are met with utmost fairness and efficiency. On efforts to strengthen protection for platform workers through the CPF scheme, he urged the Government to do more to encourage platform workers to opt in and view it as a vital component of their financial planning. It should collaborate closely with platform operators to ensure that CPF participation does not lead to any form of disadvantage for workers but is seen as the “best choice”. This would help platform workers secure a better financial future and contribute to a more stable and equitable labour market, he said.
