Motion: Andre Low on an economy of the future that works for all
It is getting harder for young people to find jobs, and the government’s Economic Strategy Review must give more attention to the critical first transition from education or National Service into stable work, said NCMP Andre Low. In parliament on Wednesday (Aug 5), he called for a “fair start promise” to all Singapore youth, making four proposals. Open more entry-level jobs to capable beginners, expanding the Skills and Workforce Development Agency’s (SWDA) Careers & Skills Passport to facilitate job matching and hiring. Build a national market for proper paid apprenticeships. Use the government’s economic leverage to create additional job opportunities, such as through targeted temporary risk-sharing arrangements or making workforce development a factor in public procurement. The SWDA should also measure and report on outcomes, he said.
