Motion: Mark Lee on an economy of the future that works for all
The Workers’ Party (WP) motion sets out aspirations that few would disagree with, said NMP Mark Lee - a more inclusive economy, more space for entrepreneurs to experiment, opportunities for businesses and workers to succeed, and a stronger base of Singapore companies and capital capable of venturing abroad. The question is how to achieve them and who should act, he added. Mr Lee outlined the importance of government and businesses working together and urged firms to make the Singapore Business Federation - which he chairs - as well as chambers and trade associations their “first port of call” in navigating policy, financing and workforce transformation. In parliament on Wednesday (Aug 5), he said the wording of the WP motion suggested that the stated aspirations “somehow stand apart” from the government’s Economic Strategy Review and he could not support the motion in its current form.
