Motion: Patrick Tay on artificial intelligence transition with no jobless growth

14:24 Min

Equitable growth, enhanced protections and engaged workforce - these are the “3 Es” that must guide Singapore in the way forward, said MP Patrick Tay. Speaking in parliament on Wednesday (May 6), he pointed out that the impact of AI on the broad middle means that it is a “once in a generation technology”. He also warned that it could be a “once in a generation divider” that concentrates gains to those who control it, while displacing the very same workers who help to design, implement and build it. Mr Tay urged the government to encourage reciprocity through programmes that allow knowledge and expertise flow to local workers. He also hopes the government can consider measures to address the needs of workers impacted by AI.
