Motion: Tan See Leng on government response to political salaries review

If entry into public service comes at too high a personal cost for too many capable Singaporeans, then over time, Singapore will indeed narrow the pool from which it can draw its leaders from. And that would be a far greater cost than any salary debated in the House, said Minister for Trade and Industry (Energy & Industry) Tan See Leng. Speaking in parliament on Thursday (Sep 10), he expressed hope that when younger capable Singaporeans in the private sector are asked to serve in future, it would not be made unnecessarily harder or progressively more difficult for them. He stressed that the strength of the government depends on whether it can continue to recruit the best people. “That is an investment in Singapore's future that will always be worth making,” he said.
