Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim on foreign interference in criminal justice system

05:29 Min

The majority of Singaporeans support the use of the death penalty for serious crimes. While other countries and non-governmental organisations may not share the same view, this is an issue for Singaporeans to decide, said Minister of State for Home Affairs Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9) in reply to an MP's questions, he addressed the issue of the dismissal of an application made against the Attorney-General by 17 prisoners awaiting capital punishment. He said the "unseemly series of events", which included putting up false allegations on the affidavit and then leaking it overseas, appeared to have been an attempt to "weaken public trust" in the criminal justice system and stir feelings in Singapore's multiracial society by using foreigners. Singapore and its people need to guard against such foreign interference, he said.
