Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim on why classification of etomidate as a harmful drug is a temporary measure

04:42 Min

There is insufficient evidence of the long-term addictiveness of etomidate, as its abuse is a relatively recent development. It has not been proscribed as a controlled drug under the United Nations drug conventions. However, as the situation involving etomidate-laced vapes or Kpods was deemed urgent, the Singapore Government has temporarily listed it under the Misuse of Drugs Act to enhance legislative powers available for enforcement and rehabilitation, pending the strengthening of vaping laws. Such classification is very carefully evaluated due to the heavy penalties imposed. Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim said this in parliament on Friday (Sep 26) in response to an MP’s questions.
