Murali Pillai on Constitution and Penal Code Amendment Bills relating to Section 377A

15:18 Min

Ensure that policy issues which have social and political ramifications are dealt with firmly in Parliament, said MP Murali Pillai. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Nov 28), he pointed out that Members in the House have a much better ability to deal with thorny issues, compared with the courts. As elected representatives, they have a "much better pulse" on what the people think and what is needed to ensure Singapore's cohesiveness, he added. He also said Parliament has a unique ability to accommodate divergent views and reach a consensus that allows society to march on and make progress. He also voiced support for the proposed repeal of Section 377A, calling it the "correct thing to do". He said it reflects Singapore's collective will towards equality while capturing the wide agreement that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. It is an "elegant accommodation", he said.
