Murali Pillai on Land Surveyors (Amendment) Bill
The work of land surveyors demarcates property boundaries needed for the issuance of titles and land development work. Surveyors also play a key role in development projects, from concept to construction and beyond. Land surveying is now evolving, with developing technologies that are creating new and exciting opportunities. Changes were announced in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 6) to help local land surveyors pursue such opportunities abroad, while also allowing Singapore to benefit from the expertise of their foreign counterparts. This will be by facilitating the implementation of Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRAs) between Singapore and other countries, starting with ASEAN. MRAs will enable exchange of talent and strengthening of capabilities as they share knowledge and best practices. The Bill lays out eligibility criteria and scope of work for foreign land surveyors in Singapore. Meanwhile, local registered surveyors will be able to use a new title that gives them greater professional recognition. The Bill also proposes to strengthen the regulator’s powers by increasing fines and penalties to effectively deter illegal practice and improper conduct in land surveying. The details were outlined by Minister of State for Law Murali Pillai.
