Murali Pillai on public housing motions

20:27 Min

There is no basis for the allegation that the Government is not delivering affordable and accessible housing for a majority of Singaporeans, said MP Murali Pillai in Parliament on Monday (Feb 6). He was responding to a motion moved by NCMPs Leong Mun Wai and Hazel Poa from the Progress Singapore Party (PSP). Mr Murali pointed out that Singapore has the highest rate of homeownership in the world at 90 per cent and the quality of public housing and supporting infrastructure is high. PSP’s motion, he said, is “naive” because it states aspirations without costs. On the other hand, a motion put forward by the National Development Minister, in his view, features two key components of the PAP Government - socialism and long-term planning - and requires difficult political choices. Mr Murali elaborated on why Singapore fares relatively well on housing affordability and accessibility compared with other major cities and countries.
