Nadia Ahmad Samdin on Israel-Hamas conflict

14:21 Min

The Israel-Hamas war has exposed how untenable the situation in Israel and Palestine is and its impact on the rest of the world, said MP Nadia Ahmad Samdin in Parliament on Monday (Nov 6). Amid the conflict, she called on Singaporeans not to give in to Islamophobia, anti-Semitism or other forms of discrimination. She asked how Singapore can encourage safe outlets for the expression of emotions and promotion of understanding even when people disagree, how community and religious leaders can be better equipped to guide on such matters which have domestic implications, and how Singapore’s highly connected society can be readied to cope when the frontlines of conflict are increasingly digital. Ms Nadia said three things are clear - the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza needs to be addressed urgently; while a state has a right to self-defence, this must be tempered by proportionality; and Israel and the Palestinians must work towards a durable peace as the prolonged cycle of violence is gradually reducing confidence in the possibility of a lasting two-state solution.
