Nadia Ahmad Samdin on Societies (Amendment) Bill

05:41 Min

It is important for Singapore to encourage a thriving people sector where those who are passionate about causes such as the environment, youth empowerment and mental health can exchange ideas, advocate for their concerns and take action. Many such organisations begin as ground-up initiatives and later apply to become societies so that they can access funding to be sustainable in the long run. Most of their members may be volunteers with full-time jobs. Therefore, the process of registration should be made simple, efficient and friendly. MP Nadia Ahmad Samdin made these points in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 4). She asked for more clarity on the conditions under which registration of a society may be rejected or where a society may be asked to amend its rules in order to be registered. She also wanted to know if office-bearers in societies can receive governance training and whether they must be of a minimum age and experience.
