Ng Chee Meng on Workplace Fairness (Dispute Resolution) Bill
The Workplace Fairness (Dispute Resolution) Bill recognises and affirms the vital role played by the unions, said MP Ng Chee Meng. Speaking in parliament on Tuesday (Nov 4), he said with the Employment Claims Tribunals limit being raised to S$250,000 for workplace fairness claims, the unions can now support and represent even more members. He noted that the time limits to file claims can be quite tight and asked if the government could consider a little bit more flexibility for exceptional cases. He also pointed out that laws alone cannot create fairness and there is still work to be done to shift mindsets, raise standards and nurture strong labour-management cooperation. Mr Ng said NTUC and its unions will keep working steadfastly with employers and the government to make fairness a reality.
