Ng Eng Hen on Singapore Armed Forces and Other Matters Bill

28:16 Min

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will form a fourth full-fledged service arm to protect Singapore in the digital domain. Called the Digital and Intelligence Service (DIS), it will build on the growth of the Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) community to raise, train and sustain cyber troops and capabilities. Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen outlined its key roles during the second reading of the Singapore Armed Forces and Other Matters Bill and Constitution of the Republic of Singapore (Amendment No. 2) Bill in Parliament on Tuesday (Aug 2). He described the proposed DIS as the "force on the front line" against a full spectrum of threats and potential aggressors in a porous digital environment. Its job is to protect networks and systems, as well as strengthen the SAF's resilience in operations. The DIS will work closely with national agencies to leverage one another's strengths. It will be led by a Chief of Digital and Intelligence Service. Dr Ng said the DIS will further strengthen the country's national defence to build for the next generation an even better and stronger Singapore.
