Ng Ling Ling on Casino Control (Amendment) Bill
The consequences of problem gambling and illegal acts in casinos not only impact the individuals involved, but also cause severe hardship to their family members and negatively impact society, said MP Ng Ling Ling. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 10), she said strengthening the casino control legislation will be a step in the right direction. But she raised concerns on the move to criminalise violation of family visit limits. While she supports the increased penalties, she pointed out that the families of problem gamblers often face immense financial distress. She wanted to know the considerations for fines and jail terms. She is concerned that the burden of the fine of S$10,000 is usually shouldered by innocent family members instead of the problem gambler.
