Ng Ling Ling on Maintenance of Parents (Amendment) Bill
When elderly parents have behavioural issues such as problem gambling, alcoholism or drug addiction, children may be reluctant to pay maintenance as they fear their parents will waste the money and entrench their problems further, leading to worse outcomes than before. MP Ng Ling Ling made this point in Parliament on Tuesday (Jul 4). She said that to address such cases, non-monetary orders are required, especially professional interventions. Ms Ng welcomed proposed amendments to the Maintenance of Parents Act which will give the Tribunal in charge the discretion to order such interventions and subject maintenance payments to compliance.
