Ng Ling Ling on Singapore’s COVID-19 response
Before the next pandemic hits, the Government should conduct a “systematic scan” in every sector where lower-cost workers, including migrant workers, are employed, to ensure that employers or agents are regulated and made responsible for their welfare. These are among the vulnerable groups who require a comprehensive support system to be in place so that they do not suffer in a crisis. MP Ng Ling Ling made this point in Parliament on Monday (Mar 20). Another group she highlighted was individuals, especially children, at risk of family violence. She said measures must be put in place to ensure that the Ministry of Social and Family Development and social workers have more flexibility to remove such people from harm even in a crisis when restrictions may be in place. Ms Ng also urged the Government to build on advances made during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that telehealth becomes part of the new norm in healthcare.
