Ong Hua Han on Workplace Fairness Bill
Discrimination has no place in the work environment and discrimination in all its forms must be eradicated if Singapore is to build a truly inclusive community. NMP Ong Hua Han said this in Parliament on Tuesday (Jan 7), where he voiced his support for the Workplace Fairness Bill. However, he highlighted that discrimination may not always be direct, for example, when key information in a company is shared through verbal communication which excludes employees who are deaf or hard of hearing, said Mr Ong. While the employer might believe they are being fair by giving instructions to all employees in the same way, this approach “disadvantages those of us who genuinely require tailored adjustments to thrive”, he added. Mr Ong expressed hope that more employers will take fairness beyond just a legal obligation, but as an opportunity to embrace the benefits of workplace diversity and “above all, to do what is right”.
