Poh Li San on Good Samaritan Food Donation Bill
The Good Samaritan Food Donation Bill could be “a significant game-changer” in the management of under-utilised food resources and waste reduction, while helping low-income families cope with rising food expenses and assist them in monitoring their nutrition intake, said MP Poh Li San. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 7), she said the logistics is viable because Singapore is small, with good transport accessibility to reach anywhere in a short time. However, she pointed to areas where more will need to be done. These include creating awareness, bringing “lighthouse partners” such as restaurant and hotel associations as well as major supermarket chains on board, establishing key food collection and distribution nodes across the country, and getting Social Service Offices and Family Service Centres to help achieve more targeted outreach to families who would benefit from regular food donation. She said the Singapore Armed Forces could consider activating some NSmen to be involved in the efforts too.
