Pritam Singh on Registration of Criminals (Amendment) Bill
The Workers’ Party supports proposals put before Parliament to expand the DNA database available to police, to the extent that it will help them crack cases and bring criminals to justice, said Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh. However, he raised the following questions in the House on Monday (Sep 12). How will the secrecy of the DNA database be ensured, given the sensitivity of the data and risks of cyberattacks or misuse? What other uses of DNA information are being contemplated beyond investigative purposes and will the Government undertake to seek Parliamentary approval for this? What factors will officers consider in deciding whether to take DNA samples from those convicted of eligible crimes? Lastly, what is the cost of taking a DNA sample from a suspect or offender?
