Rahayu Mahzam on affordability of cancer services

03:16 Min

In Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 21), MP Yip Hon Weng asked if the Ministry of Health will consider allowing more MediSave use for patients who might need services like consults and tests for late-stage cancers. He also asked how often a new cap of S$3,600 a year for MediShield Life claims for cancer drug services will be reviewed. In reply, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Health Rahayu Mahzam said the MediSave limit is sized to cover the 10 per cent co-insurance of MediShield Life for treatments under the Cancer Drug List (CDL) and is currently more than enough. If subsidised patients face affordability challenges after the subsidies, insurance and tapping on MediSave, they can apply for financial assistance. As for the S$3,600 cap, Ms Rahayu said this will cover nine in 10 subsidised bills in public health institutions and patients with Integrated Shield Plans or riders will have higher coverage. The impact will be monitored and policies adjusted if necessary.
