Raj Joshua Thomas on Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill
The proposed amendments will enable co-operatives (co-ops) to have more flexibility in the use of their reserves while management committee members can receive an honorarium and allowance, said NMP Raj Joshua Thomas. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Apr 3), he said this is fair as co-ops are economically driven vehicles and members should be compensated fairly for their contributions. He also sought clarifications on the Co-operative Societies (Amendment) Bill. He pointed out that some of the provisions can be quite technical and wanted to know how the Government will educate co-op members about their rights and management committee members about their duties.
