Saktiandi Supaat on cost of living crisis

The Government has taken active, wide-ranging steps to cushion the impact of inflation pressures on ordinary Singaporeans and has helped reduce their vulnerability to price increases. This has been achieved through various measures such as monetary policy and fiscal assistance. MPs and grassroots advisers can also take discretionary measures to mitigate cost pressures for constituents. MP Saktiandi Supaat said this in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 7). He said the global inflationary environment and pressing social needs such as an ageing population mean there are multiple fiscal demands that the Government has to meet. He said society must take on a fair share of these cost pressures but the Government will ensure that this remains affordable for the average Singaporean while providing targeted assistance to low-income groups. Mr Saktiandi said he believed this approach was more prudent than “kicking the can down the road” when it is unclear if there will be a better time to implement some of these policies.
