03:42 Min

In Parliament on Tuesday (May 9), MP Seah Kian Peng moved a motion to introduce a Bill to amend the Maintenance of Parents Act 1995 (MPA). It makes two proposals – first, to enhance the powers of the Tribunal for the Maintenance of Parents, and the Commissioner, to ensure that neglected parents are adequately supported. Second, to put in place new processes to prevent the misuse of the MPA by parents who have abandoned, abused or neglected their children. Mr Seah led a work group which conducted two rounds of public consultation. He said there was general support for the proposed amendments. Leave was given in the House to introduce the Bill.
