Shahira Abdullah on Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Bill

If the needs of national security outweigh the needs of checks and balances and transparency, a balance must be struck and its consequences understood. NMP Shahira Abdullah, who made this call in Parliament on Monday (Oct 4), said this will have a bearing on the trust of Singaporeans in the Government and its systems. She said while Singapore must always be prepared against the threat of foreign interference, she hopes that in the implementation of the law, Singapore does not inadvertently lose public trust, discourage local political discourse or advocacy, or affect its reputation as an open trading hub. She also sought clarifications on the Bill.
