Sharael Taha on Administration of Muslim Law (Amendment) Bill
Current Muslim community funds only support day-to-day and short-term needs, which is why the proposal to let the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) create wakafs to support long-term needs is a good one, said MP Sharael Taha in Parliament on Monday (Feb 5). One such need is to ensure that Muslim religious leaders are adequately equipped to guide the community in navigating increasingly complex issues. However, Mr Sharael noted that the Bill does not mention any restriction on donors to the wakafs created by MUIS. He asked if contributions from foreign donors will be accepted and if so, how to prevent foreign actors from influencing the intent and direction of the wakafs. Separately, he asked what will be the prerequisites for a foreign halal certification body to be recognised by MUIS and whether regular audits will be required.
