Sharael Taha on Foreign Interference (Countermeasures) Bill

Singapore needs strong safeguards to protect its national sovereignty, security, social cohesion and democratic institutions, said MP Sharael Taha. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Oct 4), he cited several factors in support of an anti-foreign interference law. Firstly, Singapore is a small country, with a digitally connected population. Secondly, fault lines and sensitive issues like race and religion can be easily manipulated by foreign actors to fracture social cohesion. Thirdly, Singapore's open economy, which keeps it relevant and competitive globally, implies that it must balance the needs of all stakeholders while putting forward the country's national interests. He also stressed the need for open conversations with all Singaporeans, protected from foreign interference.
