Shawn Loh on Securities and Futures (Amendment) Bill

05:47 Min

In parliament on Thursday (May 7), MP Shawn Loh welcomed the likely benefits of facilitating dual-listing arrangements on the Singapore Exchange and overseas exchanges; but he also spoke about what the move does not, in and of itself, provide. First, it does not guarantee spillovers beyond the financial services sector. Mr Loh said quality overseas and local firms must be encouraged to anchor headquarters and high value-added functions in Singapore after listing. Second, it does not mean more domestic companies will necessarily benefit from the equities market. Mr Loh said ambitious, high-growth mid-sized firms should be helped to raise capital via this avenue, while not lowering the quality bar by allowing those with poor business fundamentals or bad corporate governance to list.
