Shawn Loh on Skills and Workforce Development Agency Bill
The new integrated Skills and Workforce Development Agency reflects the shift from focusing only on education before getting a job to continuing education and training, said MP Shawn Loh. Speaking in parliament on Tuesday (May 5), he noted that SkillsFuture Singapore and its resources would be moving from the Ministry of Education (MOE) to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and suggested appointing an MOE political office holder for a secondary role at MOM. The second shift is from a supply-driven model to a demand-led one, which is closer to employers and the marketplace, said Mr Loh. He stressed the need for renewed focus and increased resources to support enterprise-led training. Perhaps the political office holders at MOE and MOM can also have roles in the National Trades Union Congress, he said.
