Sitoh Yih Pin on cost of living crisis

14:30 Min

Less tariffs and taxes, more top-ups and handouts - that is how MP Sitoh Yih Pin summed up what he had heard from opposition MPs during the debate on a motion on cost of living in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 7). His response was that at the end of the day, the Government has to balance the Budget for all Singaporeans. He said that while people are hurting from inflation, there is “pain relief” in the form of targeted assistance which Singapore is doing “particularly well compared to some other countries”. No one is being left behind, he said. Mr Sitoh said doing the right thing is “not about straddling the middle ground to gain some votes” and that unless there is “a real crisis like COVID-19”, Singapore must safeguard its reserves.
