Taiwan bets US$4.4 billion on Alaska LNG
Taiwan says it is making progress on a deal to buy liquefied natural gas or LNG from Alaska after US President Donald Trump announced that Taipei would take 30% of output from a proposed pipeline. Taiwan's economy ministry says its energy firm CPC Corp plans to buy six million tonnes of LNG a year and invest up to US$4.4 billion in the project. But the deal's final terms are not yet clear. The proposed Alaska LNG project is estimated to cost about US$54 billion and still needs firm commercial commitments to secure financing. Mr Trump has also touted South Korean investment but Seoul says its participation remains under review. The announcement came as the US president campaigned in Alaska ahead of November's midterm elections, where Republicans face a competitive Senate race. Kate Fisher has more from Washington DC.
