Tan See Leng on getting younger Singaporeans to take up trade jobs

03:30 Min

It is “not realistic” to aim to grow the Singaporean core in every occupation, and the approach the Government takes is to prepare the workforce for jobs that are in demand as the economy transforms. Manpower Minister Tan See Leng made this point on Monday (Apr 4) in response to a Parliamentary question on whether there are strategies to encourage younger Singaporeans to take up trade jobs such as licensed electricians and plumbers. Dr Tan said that as the economy expands, there has been a shift towards higher value-added activities and modern services, with the profile of jobs also correspondingly shifting. From 2011 to 2021, the proportion of resident workers in PMET jobs rose from 52.7 per cent to 62.1 per cent, and a higher proportion of younger workers aged 25 to 29 were in those roles - 75.5 per cent in 2021, against 67 per cent in 2011.
