Tan See Leng responds to motion on artificial intelligence transition with no jobless growth
Singapore will not leave the future of work and its people’s livelihoods to chance amid disruption from AI, said Manpower Minister Tan See Leng. He told parliament on Wednesday (May 6) that the country will shape a transformation that is inclusive, forward-thinking and “anchored in real action”. The government, employers and unions will work together with Singaporeans as “co-pilots”, he added. Dr Tan was responding to a motion on an AI transition with no jobless growth, moved by labour chief Ng Chee Meng. He said the government will study NTUC’s proposal to raise the income ceiling of the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme to better support higher-income individuals. The government also shares Mr Ng’s ambition to elevate NTUC’s Company Training Committee initiative to tripartite level. Dr Tan said the new Tripartite Jobs Council will pay special attention to students and young workers anxious about AI’s impact on entry-level jobs.
