Tin Pei Ling on Building a Healthier SG
The White Paper represents a major turning point in Singapore's public healthcare policy, which has always placed greater emphasis on treatment, says MP Tin Pei Ling. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 5), she said against the backdrop of an ageing population, it is even more important for the Government to provide quality and affordable healthcare. Preventive healthcare is a better option, she said. She stressed the need for "buy-in" from the people. She also wanted to know how the Government plans to work with agencies and various social organisations to ensure that estates have a basic package of recreational facilities, community partners and health activities. She asked if such amenities and facilities can be customised as mature estates may have more elderly residents who need not just recreational activities but also social and financial support. She also urged the Government to step up efforts to support mental health. Ms Tin also sought clarification from MP Jamus Lim on his speech earlier in the House.
