Tin Pei Ling on Maintenance of Parents (Amendment) Bill
Singapore needs to consider how an ageing population and the increase in smaller families will impact the meaning of family in society in the long run, and how Asian traditional values will be affected, said MP Tin Pei Ling. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Jul 4), she stressed that moral values cannot be legislated but she believes the Maintenance of Parents Act will enable deserving parents to obtain maintenance and provide estranged family members a chance to reconcile. At the same time, it will reaffirm society’s emphasis on family values, while ensuring that children who have been harmed are fairly treated, she said.
