The train captain who drove Singapore's first-generation MRT trains
SMRT train captain Mohd Zaidi Sulaiman began driving Singapore's first-generation MRT trains, the Kawasaki Heavy Industries C151, in 1994 when he was just 20. The fleet of 66 KHI C151 trains served passengers on the North-South Line and East-West Line for over 37 years. They marked the start of Singapore’s MRT journey in November 1987, which saw the train ply five stations on the North-South Line, from Yio Chu Kang to Toa Payoh. The last train of its kind was decommissioned on Sep 26, 2025.
