Vikram Nair on Cross-Border Railways (Border Control Co-Location) Bill

07:54 Min

As Singapore and Malaysia move towards opening the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link, it is important that they get the arrangements right, said MP Vikram Nair. If done well, it would not only ease congestion and improve the lives of Singaporeans and Malaysians, but also strengthen the close economic and social ties between both sides, he said. Speaking in parliament on Tuesday (May 5), he sought clarifications on a few points. One of them relates to the purpose of allowing Malaysian border controls to be applied within Singapore. He asked why it is necessary for such a move. Turning to the extent of powers that Malaysian officers may exercise, he wanted to know how the government would ensure accountability and oversight for actions taken by foreign officers operating in Singapore.
