Vikram Nair on racial harmony and constitutional amendment bills
The Maintenance of Racial Harmony Bill introduces important new tools for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to continue to protect Singapore’s racial harmony in a more calibrated way, said MP Vikram Nair. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 4), he said legislation remains a necessary tool to promote and maintain racial harmony, and the Bill adds clarity by specifying the actual actions that constitute the offence and sending an important signal on what is unacceptable conduct. He wanted to know how MHA intends to apply the measures, saying it probably needs to develop a set of interventions and procedures.
