Vivian Balakrishnan on use of diplomatic bags
The diplomatic bag is used to carry official documents but limited quantities of personal items are allowed for staff to perform their duties overseas effectively. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, some limited medical supplies were sent to staff. There has been no instance of questionable use of diplomatic bags in the past five years, except for a case that is presently before the courts. Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said this in reply to MPs' questions in Parliament on Wednesday (Jan 10). He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has a system and guidelines for the proper use of the diplomatic bag, and it will review its processes periodically.
