37:41 Min

COVID-19 did not just present a health and economic crisis, but also a social crisis, said Minister of State for Social and Family Development Sun Xueling. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Mar 20), she said she is grateful “we made the right choices together”, to help others and in so doing “help ourselves”. Most importantly, Singaporeans trusted the authorities to manage the crisis to the best of their ability, as well as in one another to do the right thing. As a result, they were able to respond with courage, concern and kindness. “We not only averted a social crisis, we emerged stronger as a society,” she said. Ms Sun stressed the importance of mutual trust and mutual support to avert a social crisis together and safeguard Singapore’s way of life. She said Singapore did well to support the vulnerable. Faced with the “crisis of a generation”, Singaporeans trusted one another, stayed calm and carried on, she said. Ordinary Singaporeans did extraordinary things together, and it is this spirit that prevented a health and economic crisis from becoming a social crisis, she said. Ms Sun said Singapore will redouble efforts to strengthen its social compact and build a more resilient, caring and inclusive society.
