Baey Yam Keng on Land Transport and Related Matters Bill
The speed limit for mobility vehicles on public paths will be lowered to 6kmh. There will be dimension and weight limits for personal mobility aids (PMAs) used on public paths. Users of mobility scooters must be certified to have a medical need for the device. Mobility scooters have to be checked for compliance and registered before they are sold. These measures represent an important shift to put in place upstream controls and strengthen the laws to make the paths safer for everyone, said Minister of State for Transport Baey Yam Keng. He told parliament on Tuesday (Feb 3) that the government has been working with stakeholders and user groups to prepare for the shift, such as readying the healthcare sector in granting a Certificate of Medical Need and encouraging retailers to shift to PMAs that are compliant. The government wants the new rules to take effect from Jun 1 this year.
