Joan Pereira on Elections (Integrity of Online Advertising) (Amendment) Bill

05:47 Min

A ban on deepfakes during elections should include content spread via messaging apps, which are key sources of information and news for Singaporeans. Otherwise, they are a loophole that can be exploited by bad actors, said MP Joan Pereira in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 15). Measures should also be widened to cover not just manipulated content depicting political candidates, but indirect depictions and representations which could still cast doubt on or misrepresent a candidate and what they stand for, she said. Ms Pereira noted that during elections, there may be a flood of manipulated content maliciously designed to overwhelm the system. She asked how the Government will ensure that those in charge of handling feedback and requests for corrective directions are adequately resourced and trained.
