President Tharman Shanmugaratnam outlines government’s priorities at opening of 15th Parliament
Singapore will nurture a “we first” society at every level, starting in the community, said President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Outlining the government’s priorities at the opening of the country's 15th Parliament on Friday (Sep 5), he stressed the need for unity, shared responsibility and stronger community ties amid global uncertainty. He said Singapore can shape its own destiny by charting its course with quiet confidence and resolve. Mr Tharman said the first priority is to “secure our home” and safeguard Singapore's place in the world. He pointed out that Singapore has long invested steadily in its defence and will continue to strengthen its capabilities to counter emerging threats. At the same time, Singapore will play a constructive role in efforts to shape a fair and stable global order. Mr Tharman also stressed the need for a strong economy to generate the resources needed to secure Singapore’s future and improve lives. Singapore must adapt faster and innovate more boldly and this is why it is refreshing its economic strategies, he said. The work has begun and it will go deep into the issues that matter most, he added. Much effort would be required to restructure industries and build deeper capabilities, he said. Mr Tharman said Singapore also aims to ensure that its progress uplifts everyone, and citizens should have the confidence that whatever lies ahead, they can pursue their aspirations and provide for their families.
