Singapore's 15th Parliament opens; Seah Kian Peng re-elected as Speaker of Parliament
Singapore's 15th Parliament has opened, at a time that President Tharman Shanmugaratnam described as a "critical juncture" in the country's national journey. The head of state laid out the government's priorities and new strategies, for Singapore to thrive in a turbulent world. Newly re-elected Speaker of the House Seah Kian Peng urged MPs not to play to the gallery, reminding them that the House of Parliament is "not a live stream on TikTok". He added they should be clear, succinct and concise, without repeating themselves. His advice came as the 15th Parliament swore in the largest number of MPs - and women - in Singapore’s history.
